The Fall Color Report: 5 Color Families We’re Falling For
Fall has always known how to do color. But beyond the expected orange and brown, there’s a whole spectrum of richer, moodier, and warmer shades ready for their moment. This season, we’re looking at color by the family. Golden amber fades into honey, deep greens stretch from fern to moss, and rusty reds meet their moodier oxblood counterparts. The best part is there’s no one way to use them. Go all in on one color family, borrow a single shade, or mix them into an entirely unexpected event design. From linens and tabletop to bars, lounge furniture, and statement pieces, consider this our fall color report and your excuse to add a little more color to the guest list.
Oxblood & Rust
Seeing red? We highly recommend it.
Fall brings out the richer side of the red family, and oxblood and rust are leading the charge. From warm terracotta and burnt red to wine, burgundy, and deep oxblood, these shades have plenty of depth without relying on the brighter reds that tend to take over later in the season.
Introduce rust through Velvet Rust or a patterned option like Ellery Rust, then deepen the look with the Velvet Merlot Pillow or rich wood pieces like Jasper Natural Brown Coffee Table. For an even bigger dose of warmth, Milano Cognac Sofa or Elowyn Bamboo Barrel Chair can bring the color story well beyond the tabletop.
These are reds with a little more attitude, and we’re very into it.

Mauve & Mulberry
Pink’s moodier cousin has arrived.
Mauve and mulberry live on the softer side of fall color without fading into the background. Dusty mauves, muted berry shades, and deep mulberry give this family plenty of range, from barely-there color to something much richer.
Bring a softer shade into the mix with Checkered Plaid Elderberry, Monaco Woodrose, or the Helena Fawn Stemless Wine Glass, then turn up the saturation with Lamour Ultra Aubergine, Tuscany Plum Napkin, or the Century Side Chair Lavender. A patterned accent like the Mariposa Garden Pillow can pull several shades together without making everything feel perfectly matched.
Sweet, but not too sweet. Moody, but not too serious. Mauve and mulberry know how to work both sides.

Fern & Moss
Our green phase? Still going strong.
Fern and moss take the greens we love year-round and give them a richer point of view for fall. There’s room for everything from muted, earthy sage-greens to deep forest tones, making this one color family that can go in plenty of directions.
Start at the table with the Koda Ribbed Fern Glassware, Reagan Moss Placemat, or Oliver Meadow Solid china, then bring in pattern through Maye Juniper or Rustic Moss Plaid Napkin. Beyond the tabletop, pieces like Ashton Olive Barrel Side Chair, Walter Olive Velvet Sofa, and Bradford Brunswick Green Panel Bar let the color take up a little more space.
Soft and earthy or dark and dramatic, green can play the supporting role or steal the show. We’re giving it the green light either way.

Amber & Honey
Consider this golden hour without the time limit.
Amber and honey bring that unmistakable fall warmth in shades ranging from soft champagne and golden yellow to richer amber and caramel. And while they may feel right at home this time of year, there’s nothing one-note about them.
Bring the glow to the tabletop with Hepburn Amber Stemware, Kaleb Honey Stoneware, Prism Gold & Tortoise Flatware, or a warm linen like Adelaide Antique Gold. For something softer, patterns like Millie Vine Buttercup can introduce golden tones without making them the entire story. Metallic pieces like Knox Antique Brass Side Table add another way to catch the light.
Whether it’s one amber glass at every place setting or a full dose of gold, this color family knows how to find the sunny side of fall.

Chocolate & Wheat
Neutral? Technically. Boring? Not even close.
Chocolate and wheat cover a lot of ground, from creamy natural tones and light oak to walnut, espresso, and deep cocoa brown. It’s a color family that proves you don’t need a bold hue to create plenty of interest.
Bring in lighter shades with the Margaux Beechwood Barstool, Mari Scallop Natural Woven Placemat, or the Weston Wheat Pillow, then add depth with Velvet Cafe Noir, Rowan Walnut Side Table, and the Curved Wells Weathered Oak Bar. Patterns like Berkshire Walnut and Jolie Wheat can bring several shades together, while burl wood details like Rhodes Burl Flatware add another layer of warmth.
Wood grain, velvet, woven fibers, plaid, and warm neutrals all have a place here. When texture gets involved, brown has absolutely no interest in playing it safe.

Color Us Ready for Fall
The colors of fall go well beyond one predictable shade of orange. Amber can glow, green can get moody, mauve can deepen, red can turn rusty, and brown can be anything but basic.
The fun is deciding what to do with them. Start with a favorite rental and build from there, mix shades from the same family, or bring a few of these colors together in ways that feel entirely your own. There’s no formula required.
After all, fall looks pretty good in color.
